One of the biggest reasons press-on nails don’t last isn’t the quality of the nails—it’s skipping the preparation process.
Many people assume they can simply apply press-on nails straight out of the box. While this may work for a short time, natural oils, moisture, cuticles, and the smooth surface of your nails can all prevent sticky tabs or nail glue from creating a strong bond. As a result, your nails may begin lifting at the edges or even pop off after only a day or two.
Proper nail preparation creates the ideal surface for adhesion. Whether you prefer sticky tabs for reusable wear or nail glue for longer-lasting results, taking just a few extra minutes to prepare your nails can dramatically improve both comfort and durability.
Below are the five essential steps we recommend before every application.

Start by trimming your natural nails as short as possible. Shorter nails allow your press-on nails to sit flush against your nail bed, creating a cleaner and more natural-looking finish. It also prevents your natural nails from peeking out underneath, especially when wearing shorter press-on styles.
Using a cuticle stick, gently push back your cuticles to expose the full nail plate. Cuticles are living skin, and if adhesive is applied over them instead of directly onto the nail, it won’t bond as effectively. Removing this barrier gives your press-on nails a larger, cleaner surface to adhere to, improving both fit and longevity.
After pushing your cuticles back, carefully trim away any loose or excess cuticles with a cuticle trimmer. This step helps eliminate dead skin that can cause lifting around the edges of your press-on nails. A smooth, clean nail contour allows the press-on nail to sit closer to your natural nail for a stronger and more secure bond.
Lightly buff the entire surface of each nail using a nail buffer. Pay special attention to the edges and corners, as these areas are often missed. The goal isn’t to thin your natural nails—it’s simply to remove the natural shine. A slightly textured surface allows both sticky tabs and nail glue to grip much more effectively, reducing the chance of early lifting.
Finally, clean every nail thoroughly with an alcohol wipe to remove any remaining oils, dust, or moisture. Even after buffing, the natural oils on your fingertips can interfere with adhesion. Once your nails are clean, avoid touching them or any other surfaces before applying your press-on nails, as this can transfer oil back onto the nail plate and weaken the adhesive.

If your press-on nails aren’t lasting as long as expected, improving your nail prep routine is often the easiest solution. These five simple steps create the ideal foundation for both sticky tabs and nail glue, helping your manicure stay secure, comfortable, and beautiful for much longer.
At Tianails, we recommend taking a few extra minutes to prep your nails before every application. It’s one small step that makes a big difference in achieving a long-lasting, salon-quality finish.
